If you’ve been wondering how do you know if you have liver problems, you’re not alone.
Many women experience symptoms like fatigue, bloating, hormone imbalances, or feeling “toxic” in their body—without realising the liver may be at the centre of it all.
The liver is not just about detoxing alcohol or chemicals. It plays a central role in digestion, hormones, energy, and overall wellbeing. When it becomes overwhelmed or sluggish, symptoms can show up throughout the whole body.

Key Benefits of Understanding This
- Recognise early signs your liver may need support
- Understand the root causes of sluggish liver symptoms
- Learn how digestion, hormones, and detox pathways are connected
- Feel more confident supporting your body (without extreme detoxing)
How Do You Know If You Have Liver Problems?
The signs are often subtle at first and can affect multiple systems in the body.
You may experience:
- Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
- Bloating or discomfort after meals
- Difficulty digesting fats
- Skin issues like acne or rashes
- Hormonal symptoms such as PMS or heavy periods
- Brain fog or poor concentration

What Causes a Sluggish Liver? (Root Causes Explained)
Liver congestion is rarely caused by one single issue.
Instead, it’s often a build-up of pressure on the system over time.
Think of it like a clogged sink—when the drainage pathways aren’t flowing well, everything starts to back up.
Let’s look at the most common sluggish liver causes.

1. Digestive Issues → More Work, Less Output
Your liver processes everything absorbed from the gut.
When digestion isn’t working well:
- Low stomach acid means food isn’t properly broken down
- Poor bile flow slows the removal of waste
- Constipation allows toxins to be reabsorbed
- Undigested food ferments and feeds bacteria
This creates a cycle where the liver ends up processing the same waste over and over again.
2. Detox Pathways Blocked
One of the biggest contributors is poor elimination.
If detox pathways are blocked:
- Bowels aren’t moving regularly
- Lymphatic flow is sluggish
- Circulation is stagnant
- Sweating is minimal
- Hydration is low
Even if your body is processing toxins, they can’t leave efficiently—so they build up.
3. Liver and Hormone Imbalance
There is a strong connection between the liver and hormone balance, especially for women.
The liver is responsible for:
- Processing excess oestrogen
- Supporting thyroid hormone conversion
- Clearing stress hormones
When this process slows:
- Hormones can recirculate
- PMS and heavy periods may worsen
- Hormone imbalance symptoms in females become more noticeable
This is why many women experience both liver symptoms and hormonal symptoms together.
4. “Healthy” Diets That Are Hard to Process
Sometimes the issue isn’t what you’re eating—but what your body can handle.
Common patterns include:
- Very high raw food intake
- Low protein or low fat diets
- Excess fruit or sugar
- Large amounts of nuts, seeds, grains, or fibre
- Skipping meals
Without enough fats and protein, bile flow slows and digestion becomes inefficient.
5. Blood Sugar Instability
Your liver plays a key role in maintaining stable blood sugar.
When blood sugar is unstable:
- You skip meals or undereat
- Stress and caffeine increase
- Energy crashes occur
The liver has to constantly release stored glucose, increasing its workload and stress.
6. Nervous System Stress
Your body cannot prioritise digestion or detox in a stressed state.
Chronic stress can lead to:
- Reduced stomach acid
- Slower digestion
- Poor elimination
- Increased inflammation
This is why supporting your nervous system is foundational for liver health.
7. Environmental & Modern Exposures
You don’t need alcohol to experience liver load.
Daily exposures include:
- Medications
- Personal care products
- Cleaning chemicals
- Pesticides and plastics
These small exposures accumulate over time, increasing the burden on the liver.
8. Nutrient Depletion
The liver requires nutrients to function properly.
Key nutrients include:
- Protein (amino acids)
- B vitamins
- Minerals
- Fat-soluble vitamins
- Cholesterol for bile production
You can be eating “clean” but still undernourished—and this reduces your body’s ability to process waste.
9. Gut Inflammation or Infection
The liver receives blood directly from the gut.
If there is:
- Dysbiosis
- SIBO
- Food sensitivities
- Gut inflammation
Then the liver must filter more toxins and inflammatory by-products, increasing its workload.
The Bigger Picture
Liver congestion isn’t usually caused by one major toxin.
It’s caused by a mismatch between what your body has to process and how well it can eliminate it.
When the load becomes too great—or the drainage pathways are not working efficiently—the system becomes overwhelmed.
A Gentle Reminder
If you’re noticing these symptoms, it doesn’t mean your body is failing.
It’s communicating.
Your body is always working to protect you—and with the right support, it can begin to restore balance.
FAQs
Common signs include fatigue, bloating, hormone imbalance, skin issues, and poor digestion—especially with fats.
Digestive issues, blocked detox pathways, hormone load, stress, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental exposures.
Yes. The liver plays a key role in processing hormones. When it becomes sluggish, hormone imbalance symptoms can develop.
How to Support Liver Detox on GAPS Diet
On the GAPS diet, liver support is approached gently and foundationally.
Rather than forcing detox, the focus is on:
- Restoring digestion – ACV, sauerkraut, beet kvass
- Supporting bile flow – eating animal fats
- Nourishing the body deeply – meat stocks, organ meats
- Opening elimination pathways – detox baths, enemas, castor oil packs
This creates the conditions for the liver to function properly—without overwhelm.
