Learn how to make DIY non-toxic all-purpose surface spray, with a few simple ingredients, that will leave your space sparkling clean! Its effective and non-toxic ingredients will help reduce your family’s toxic load and will save you money.

4 Reasons to Make DIY Cleaning Spray
There are some of the reasons to switch to a non-toxic natural cleaning spray for your home:
1. Reduced exposure to toxic ingredients
Many store-bought cleaners contain harmful chemicals such as synthetic fragrances that can impact our health in the short and long term. A 20-year longitudinal study conducted by scientists at the University of Bergen in Norway; measured lung function in 6,230 participants in 22 locations around the world and found that using cleaning products can be as harmful as smoking 20 cigarettes a day (source).
Synthetic fragrances in consumer products such as air fresheners, cleaning products, laundry supplies, and personal care products can lead to health problems such as migraine headaches, asthma attacks, rashes, dizziness, breathing difficulties, and an overall increased toxic load on the body.
‘Fragrance’ listed as an ingredient in consumer products is typically a chemical mixture of several dozen to several hundred chemicals, but none of these chemicals need to be disclosed to the consumer (source).
Avoid synthetic fragrances and other harsh chemicals by making homemade all-purpose surface spray, it’s so quick and simple!

2. Saves you money
Making your cleaning products at home is a budget-friendly way to prioritize your health. This non-toxic all-purpose surface spray is made with simple ingredients that can be used for many different natural cleaning recipes.
A first it may seem more expensive to buy the ingredients to make your cleaning products but you only use a small amount of those ingredients each time you make your surface spray as they come in a concentrated form.
The cost per bottle to make your own becomes quite low cost and you then have all the ingredients on hand to make bottle after bottle rather than running out of the store-bought kind and having to constantly repurchase.
It also gets you thinking about all the different cleaning products you may use. You will find yourself simplifying and reducing the number of cleaning products you have by sticking to just one or two more versatile and effective products.
3. More sustainable option for the environment
Making your homemade non-toxic all-purpose surface spray is environmentally friendly compared to store-bought options as:
- Pure castile soap has a lower environmental impact since it doesn’t contain additives, preservatives, artificial coloring, or other chemicals commonly found in other soaps.
- Using a glass spray bottle means you can refill it over and over again, significantly reducing the amount of disposable packing you have.
4. Customizable
One of the great things about DIY cleaning products is that you can customize them the way you want. You can choose the scent, strength, and ingredients to suit your preferences.

About the ingredients
Water – Use filtered water or distilled water to reduce the amount of minerals in water going into your spray. This leaves you with a less streaky finish and reduces the amount of toxins you are spraying around your home.
Castile Soap – Traditional soap made from olive oil, though now sometimes it is made with hemp, avocado, or coconut oil. Liquid castile soap is non-toxic and biodegradable, and it lathers just like “normal” soap but without all the toxic chemicals making it a great non-toxic cleaner. Castile soap is very concentrated, so a little goes a long way, so make sure you dilute to get the most bang for your buck.
Essential Oils for cleaning
Essential oils can be a great addition to your non-toxic all-purpose surface spray, they provide powerful natural cleaning properties and make your home smell amazing as you clean without all the hidden nasties. When souring your essential oils, do your research and look for essential oils that are unadulterated and third-party tested so you know you are getting 100% pure essential oils with no fillers.
Here are some of my favorite essential oils to include in my non-toxic all-purpose surface spray:
Lemon essential oil is known for its purifying and anti-microbial properties (source) making it a powerful cleaning aid for around your home, especially for those grease situations. Its clean, fresh, citrus aroma provides an uplifting environment and promotes a positive mood.
Tea Tree oil is a powerful natural disinfectant and contains antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties that can kill off bad bacteria (including mould) in your home (source).
Peppermint oil is refreshing and invigorating but also antibacterial and antifungal. It’s a great addition to naturally repel bugs away.
Clove oil is antibacterial, antifungal, and insecticidal (source) and is a popular mold remover is that it actually kills the spores, rather than just bleaching and hiding them.
Wild Orange has a sweet and fresh smell and is packed full of antimicrobial and antioxidant germ-fighting properties (source). It’s a powerful degreaser and adds a polished shine to dull and lackluster surfaces.
Here are a few of my favorite oil blends:
- Lemon and Tea Tree
- Lemon, peppermint and clove
