How to Do a Castor Oil Pack (Step-by-Step)
This is a simple, nourishing practice that can easily become part of your evening routine.
You’ll need:
- Organic, hexane-free castor oil
- Either a castor oil pack wrap or a soft cotton cloth
- Hot water bottle or heat pack
- Old towel (castor oil can stain)
How to use:
You can either make a simple DIY castor oil pack or use a ready-made wrap.
A castor oil pack wrap (made from organic cotton with straps) is often the easiest option. You simply apply the oil to the cloth insert, place it over the liver area (right side of the abdomen, just under the rib cage), and secure it in place. This tends to be less messy and more convenient, especially if you’re using it regularly.
If you prefer a DIY option, use a soft cotton cloth and apply enough castor oil to lightly saturate it. Place this over your abdomen, then cover with an old towel to protect clothing and surfaces. Just keep in mind there’s no way to secure it, so you’ll need to rest while using it.
Once in place, apply gentle heat using a hot water bottle or heat pack and rest for around 20–60 minutes, or longer if comfortable—even overnight.
There’s no need to overdo it. This is a gentle practice, and consistency will support you far more than intensity.

How to Store and Care for Your Castor Oil Pack

There’s no need to wash your castor oil pack every time.
Simply:
- Wipe off any excess oil
- Fold your cloth neatly
- Store it in a clean, dry place
You can continue using the same cloth for up to 2 months before needing a deeper clean.

When it’s time to refresh your cloth, a gentle, natural approach works best.
- Pre-treat the oil
Sprinkle baking soda over the oilier areas and let it sit for 15–30 minutes. - Apply a natural cleanser
Use warm water with a gentle natural soap and work into fabric. - Soak (optional)
Soak in warm water with baking soda and vinegar for 30 minutes. - Wash gently
Rinse and gently squeeze fabric. Repeat if needed. - Air dry only
